"I love writing for both audiences. Of course, my books for kids are shorter and the language is simpler but the themes are complex. For example, How to Lose Your Class Pet is about the need to forgive yourself  when you have no control over circumstances. All the books are about growth and moral values without being preachy."

"Black children need to see their lives reflected in the books they read. If they don't, they won't feel welcome in the world of literature. The lives of African-Americans are rich and diverse, and the books our children read should reflect that."
